Wednesday 28 January 2009 - Back to School

Drew was allowed to go back to school today. He went about an hour after all the other students and spent an hour with his old classmates and teacher from last year. After Drew was diagnosed last year Drew's teacher and the class decided to do 1000 kick's of a soccer ball for Drew in the tradition of 1000 cranes. Each class is listed on the ball with the number of kicks from that class and there is well over 1000. It was decided on a soccer ball, as Drew is mad about soccer and the school had already done 1000 cranes for another little boy at their school who also has cancer. Today they presented it to Drew - it was a lovely gesture and we are sure will bring Drew good health. After recess Drew and everyone else was put into their new classes. Drew has a new teacher to the school and some old friends, including Tristan, in his class and he was very happy.

Tuesday 27 January 2009

Up to the hospital today, unfortunately Drew's blood count was not high enough (as expected) for him to have treatment today. It was just 10.00am and the Children's Oncology Unit was celebrating their 10th Anniversary and having a BBQ at 11.00am, but Drew didn't want to stick around, he just wanted to go home - so we did. Happy Birthday Oncology Unit - you guys do a great job!

Monday 26 January 2009 - Happy Australia Day

Drew had his special friend Joseph over for a visit today. We had a typical Aussie bbq with sausages, lamingtons and good old Passiona. The two boys played quietly all day and celebrated Australia Day and Chinese New Year (Joseph although from Singapore, has Chinese heritage)together.

Sunday 25 January 2009

Today was much cooler after yesterday. Drew couldn't go and see the Mariners last game, so he went over a friends with Dad and Dane and watched the match on Foxtel. Drew says they haven't won since he was last in the dressing room, so he thinks he's their good luck charm.

Saturday 24 January 2009 - Home & Hot

We left hospital at 9.30 and walked out to a wall of heat, maybe we should turn around and stay. On the way home we stopped to have breakfast at McDonalds where the mobile blood bank was. I hadn't given blood in over 10 years, but thought now was a good time to start. We asked the nurse could Drew see what was happening and explained that he had leukaemia and had a transfusion the night before. The nurse was lovely and explained to Drew how they test the blood and how it goes into a special bag with an agent to stop it hardening. It then separates into plasma, platelets and haemoglobin. The rate of blood is also timed and Drew was impressed that my 470ml only took 6 minutes and 28 seconds to come out - probably had something to do with the 35C temperature.

Friday 23 January 2009 - Waiting, Waiting ....

Drew woke up fine today after his platelet transfusion. They were very busy at the hospital today and we didn't see the doctor till lunch time. Drew wasn't allowed home until he had done a No. 2 and they also had to take blood and check his results. Drew complied with the No. 2 order almost immediately, and all looked well, according to the Dr (it turned out that the black spots were passion fruit seeds). Blood results came back around 4.00pm and Drew needed another transfusion as his haemoglobin was low. The first sample for cross matching was taken, but an hour later another had to be taken as the first one was too watery from the saline flush. The blood arrived at 7.15pm and as it takes 3 hours to transfuse we were in for another night - Drew wasn't impressed.

Thursday 22 January 2009 - Unscheduled Hospital Visit

Drew was home alone today, as his brothers were at vacation care. This afternoon he went to Tristan's Birthday BBQ. When I came home from shopping Drew had a massive bruise on his leg and then told me he had black spots in his No. 2s. This can be a sign of bleeding so after ringing the hospital, they told us to come in. We arrived at 11.30pm, they accessed Drew's port and took some blood, which showed his platelets were low and he need a platelet transfusion. As Drew went to bed at 1.00am, the platelets weren't due to arrive till 2.30am. They were hung in the early hours whilst he was asleep and I don't think he knew anything about it.

Wednesday 21 January 2009

Today was much the same as yesterday, weather is pretty warm but Drew is coping well - he is definitely returning to Slim Jim.

Tuesday 20 January 2009

Drew was healthy today, played with his brothers and the playstation. Had his cytarabine injection and his nausea tablets and all was well.

Monday 19 January 2009

Treatment Day 57 - Off to hospital early today for a lumbar puncture. Not having breakfast doesn't bother Drew at all now. Drew was up to theatre by 9.50am and finished 20 minutes later. Now that he is off the steroids he doesn't wake up euphoric any more and is actually quite grumpy, today was the first time after an anaesthetic that he felt nauseous. Drew needed a blood transfusion as his platelets are quite low, so as the day went on he started to feel better and was back to himself by the afternoon. All going well we won't be back to hospital to next Tuesday, which will be the last day of treatment in this block.

Sunday 18 January 2009

Drew was a little off colour this morning and didn't have any brekky, it was almost a trip to hospital with a temperature of 37.89, only .11 and we would have been going. He came good and watched the cricket and for something different played the playstation.

Saturday 17 January 2009

Drew played cricket with Kurt, before there was a walkout, with both players spitting the dummy - important stuff backyard cricket. He played the playstation and had a small amount of Chinese for dinner.

Friday 16 January 2009

Today was a lot cooler. Drew played with Dane and looked forward to his older brothers Kyle & Kurt coming home from their soccer camp. He listened to the Mariners vs Victory game on the radio, but unfortunately the Mariners weren't victorious.

Thursday 15 January 2009

Today was an absolute scorcher. Drew had to go to John Hunter today for a blood check, his neutriphils (pacmans) were 0.1, his haemoglobin and platelets had gone up after his blood transfusion on Monday, so he didn't need another transfusion, and it was very cool in the hospital. Last day of his Carribean injection for this week. Drew had a visit from Aunties Trish, Bev and Pam and spent a quiet, hot afternoon playing the playstation.

Wednesday 14 January 2009

Drew & Dane had a nice afternoon over "Our Man Todd's" house, while Mum got to do a few messages. They spent a good two hours in the pool, played the Wii and came home and Drew watched his favourite show "Air Crash Investigations"

Tuesday 13 January 2009

Drew and Dane played cricket, monopoly and the playstation today. Drew is returning to his normal appearance now that he is off the steroids. Some of the chemotherapy drugs also reduce his appetite, so he is not eating very much on most days.

Monday 12 January 2009

A quick visit to the hospital today turned into a 7 hour visit. Drew's blood count was a bit low, so he needed a blood transfusion, which took quite a while to arrive and then takes 3 hours to transfuse. He also had his cytarabine injected into his leg (by Mummy) - all is going well. Drew will go back to hospital on Thursday for another blood count.

Sunday 11 January 2009

Drew's older brothers went away to Armidale today, so it is just Drew and Dane at home. They jumped on the trampoline and in the evening we went to the beach where the boys played penalty shots with Quincy looking on.

Saturday 10 January 2009

Drew, Dane and Daddy went for a bike ride, had milkshakes and listened to the Mariners game against Queensland on the radio.

Friday 9 January 2009

Today Drew's cousins from Wagga Wagga visited. Nicholas, Michael, William and Cameron, yes another 4 boys. They all played well together all day, with no fights or arguments and were really happy to see each other. We shared pizza for dinner, before we had to say goodbye.

Thursday 8 January 2009

Much cooler day today. Drew woke up feeling much better after his 4 hour vomiting stint. We know now to always take Danni (Ondansetron) before we have our caribbean (cytarabine)injection. There were no problems today. Drew had a nice day over Tristan's (whose hair is growing back nicely), they jumped on the trampoline, rode their scooters, played the playstation and had hot chips for lunch.

Wednesday, 7 January 2009

Another hot day, Drew had an early game of cricket with Dane, before coming inside to watch the cricket on tv. Drew didn't have his anti nausea medicine today when I gave him his injection and he suffered dearly about 3 hours later, vomiting every couple of minutes. The only 2 days Drew has vomited has been when he hasn't had the anti nausea tablets when having the injection, we won't make the same mistake again.

Tuesday 6 January 2009

Drew coped well with the hot day, staying inside watching the cricket during the hottest part of the day. No reaction to his injection again. After dinner we went to the beach and Drew managed to run up and down the sand dunes twice, with Quincy the dog in hot pursuit.

Monday 5 January 2009

Off to hospital today for another lumbar puncture. Drew's not being able to eat anything before his procedure today didn't bother him, like before and once again he was in theatre by 9.00am and out by 9.30. Drew caught up with Dr Helen and Dr Kristen (Kristen, from Norway, would tell Drew stories when he was first in hospital). His blood count, surprisingly was OK so he also had the little plastic thing put in his leg, for me to put his 'caribbean' injection in for the next four days. Drew had no ill effects, despite decreased appetite, and was out playing cricket in the backyard with his brothers in the afternoon.

Sunday 4 January 2009

We all went off to the beach today. Weather was beautiful, but current in water was a bit strong. Saw friends Michael and Nathan there who joined in for beach soccer. Drew spent the afternoon on the playstation.

Saturday 3 January 2009

No beach today, but Uncle Bones and Lucy came up from Sydney for a visit. Good game of backyard cricket was enjoyed by Uncle Bones, Daddy and all the boys.

Friday 2 January 2009

Drew spent an hour at the beach today, cricket at the nets and a relaxing day at home with his brothers. No medication except for his chemotherapy tablets he takes each night at bedtime.

Thursday 1 January - Happy New Year

Drew had a sleep in after staying up till 12.30pm and watching the fireworks. Last day of our caribbean injection, which went without a hitch and we took out the little tube with no problems. Drew spent the afternoon over friends swimming in their pool.

Wednesday 31 December 2008

Today we said Goodbye to 2008 - despite Drew's devastating news in November, the rest of the year was pretty good. Before his injection today I gave Drew some anti-nausea medication which seemed to do the trick. Drew said goodbye to 2008 on a high, with the Magical Mariners weaving their magic and the main man arranging an area that Drew and the rest of us could sit away from the crowd, enabling Drew to go and not be exposed to too many people, he also got a trip onto the field and into the dressing room. And yes the Mariners finished the year on a high with another win. We wish everyone a safe, happy and healthy 2009.
