Tuesday 24 February 2009
An early start up to John Hunter this morning. Drew is having his third bone marrow aspirant (which means they take some out to test it). He is very good and very chirpy before he goes into theatre and was happy today when he woke up, especially once he got his ham, tomato and grated cheese sandwich. Nurse Di went and spoke to Drew's class today, which the children enjoyed. Drew's results from his bone marrow test will take two weeks to come back and will tell us what risk factor he his - so fingers crossed for a standard risk, in the meantime he will start the next phase of his treatment on Tuesday, as a standard risk.
Monday 23 February 2009
Drew spent the morning doing school work at home. In the afternoon he went up to school and went up to the school oval to see two of the Mariners, Andre Gumprecht and Shane Huke and also the Rural Fire Brigade. Drew enjoyed his time at school with his friends.
Sunday 22 February 2009
Drew went off to watch Dad play soccer this week - they lost 3-1. He then came down to watch his older brother Kyle's first trial game, which they drew 1-1. Just for a bit more soccer we went to watch Kyle, Kurt and Dane play indoor soccer. Drew and Dane's team won 3-1 and the older boy's drew 1-1. After dinner the boys decided a game of backyard soccer was just the thing to finish off the day.
Saturday, 21 February 2009
After watching Kurt's cricket today, we headed up to our first Camp Quality meeting at Newcastle. The boys got to do the 'boot camp' with some Jets and Knights players and swim in the pool and go on the giant float. Drew gave the Jets players a bit of stick about last year's grand final and this year's wooden spoon. The players were very good natured about it. A good afternoon was had by all.
Friday, 20 Birthday 2009
Well no ill effects from yesterday's test, no glowing wee in the dark, or anything! Which was good. Drew did some Mathletics on the computer today, he competes against children from all over the world and his competitive nature really comes out. We popped into school as well and he got to see his classmates in 4C, who were quite excited to see him.
Thursday 19 February
Back up to John Hunter today for a routine kidney function test before Drew starts the next stage of his treatment. Drew had a small amount of radioactive material injected into his arm via a cannula, which he wasn't too keen on, but Dr Katrina did a wonderful job inserting the cannula. He then had blood taken an hour later and then more blood another 1 1/2 hours after that, from this his kidney function is able to be measured. Hopefully we won't be back to John Hunter until next Tuesday - all being well! Happy Birthday Vannessa!
Wednesday 18 February 2009
Drew finished his story he was doing on Australia. He watched a show on the ABC about the human body and had a quiet day at home.
Tuesday 17 February 2009
Up to hospital today for a blood test - results were good. Drew's platelets were over 300 (a few weeks ago they were 9), his haemoglobin was 94 and his neutrophils were .7, which means he isn't neutropenic (he at least has a few pacmans to fight viruses and bacteria). Drew was pleased that we were out fairly quickly, but we do have to return on Thursday for another blood test and a kidney function test, before he starts the next stage of treatment.
Monday 16 February 2009
Today Drew got to go to his school swimming carnival, not as a participant, but as a spectator. He really enjoyed seeing all his school friends and teachers - everyone is amazed at how well he looks. Drew also got to cheer his brother Kurt on in all his races and the teacher's in their race against each other - won by Miss McGeachie.
Sunday 15 February 2009
In between down pours the boys managed a bit of cricket in the backyard - in their pyjamas, such was the day. Other than that it was another indoor day.
Saturday, 14 February 2009
Wet rainy indoor day today - Drew feeling very healthy and sparky - just played indoor games with his brothers and watched Tom & Jerry on DVD.
Friday 13 February 2009
Black Friday by the date - but it is now 3 months since our Black Friday back on the 14 November when Drew was diagnosed, that 3 months seems like such a long time ago. Nothing bad happened today, Drew's indoor soccer team won 7 - 2 and Drew got to watch, which made him happy.
Thursday, 12 February 2009
Today is a medication and hospital free day - WHOO HOO. Also the weather has gone to the other extreme and it is now cool and wet. Drew has been doing a lot of school work this week and enjoying it.
Wednesday 11 February 2009
Drew was a bit up and down this morning, but came good in the afternoon. He was very excited to receive an email from a teacher at his school, who has since moved to Canberra. Drew did some more school work and played cricket in the backyard with his brother Kurt in the afternoon.
Tuesday 10 February 2009
Drew woke up vomiting this morning, but he took some anti-nausea medicine and was OK till a bit later in the morning when he was sick again. He didn't eat much throughout the day, but was in pretty high spirits and did quite a bit of school work.
Monday 9 February 2009
We arrived back at the Day Unit before 9.00am today. Drew was accessed and his blood taken away. His neutriphils had climbed to .2 but were just short of the required .3 to have his chemotherapy. As his platelets were high and climbing and his haemoglobin was good, Dr Frank decided as this treatment was 2 weeks overdue, we should press ahead. Drew spent the day doing 'homework' which consisted of a creative art work about himself. Of course he did himself as a Mariners player in soccer goals - and did a really good job.
Sunday 8 February 2009 - Discharged
Drew was discharged early today and arrived home about 10.00am. He played with his brothers and of course the playstation. Unfortunately we do have to go back tomorrow to see whether Drew's blood count is high enough for him to have his chemotherapy.
Saturday 7 February 2009
Still no neutrophils and no luck for the Mariners either, must have been next week's score Drew was tipping. Drew's brothers registered for soccer today and although Drew can't play this year (which is a HUGE thorn in his side), he will have a very important job as an Assistant Manager, which he is really looking forward to. Back to the air conditioned comfort tonight of the John Hunter 'Hotel'.
Friday 6 February 2009
Still no neutriphils. Drew sent his good luck message to Lawrie and the Boys (Mariners) and got to go home for a few hours. He will go back to hospital this afternoon, and watch the Mariners in his room on Foxtel. He is hoping for a 4-0 win and to have some neutriphils for tomorrow to be able to come home and stay home.
Thursday 5 February 2009
No movement in Drew's neutrophil's again today. So we got to go home again for a day pass and come back in the night. Maybe tomorrow. Drew has been quite busy doing a Chinese Dragon, which will be made into a multicultural quilt with other children's drawings. He has also been doing a bit of school work.
Wednesday 4 February 2009
Tuesday 3 February 2009
Drew's temperature has settled. He is still on antibotics, but is jumping out of his skin. We got a day pass today and were able to go home for a couple of hours. Drew got to see his brothers and have a bit of a relax at home. On his return Drew ran into one of his favourite Drs - Helen, which topped of last night's visit from another favourite Dr Kristin.
Monday 2 February 2009
Drew had baked beans for breakfast today, a chocolate milk, 2 bits of peanut butter toast for lunch and an orange for dinner - at least it was more than he had yesterday. I still couldn't eat in the room, as the smell of the hot food makes him feel sick. He played the starlight machine for most of the day and managed a few sheets of school work. He had a blood transfusion this afternoon and his temperature seems to have settled, but as his neutrophils (pacmans)are still zip, zilch zero, he won't be going home till he grows some more. He also thought yesterday's bath was good for two days, because he didn't venture out of his pyjamas today. Drew loves reading the comments on his blog - so if you are reading this he would love you to leave a comment.
Sunday 1 February 2009
Drew was still feeling pretty ordinary this morning and was sick a couple of times. He chirped up as the day progressed, but still couldn't face up to his big brother's birthday cake, so we had it outside in the fairy garden. By dinner time he was feeling much better, must have been the bath he had (it is an awesome bath)and was even talking about chicken noodle soup and managed to eat a bit of spaghetti. Drew went to sleep watching the cricket and entertained Sharna through the night, talking in his sleep, while she took his blood pressure.
Saturday 31 January 2009 - Back to hospital
Today I was going down to Budgewoi for my younger brother Dane to register to play soccer and I was going to have a chat to Lawrie and the boys and get my jersey signed. Unfortunately it didn't turn out that way. After seeing the older boys off to cricket, Mummy thought I felt hot and took my temperature - 38.97, not good, off to hospital we went. When we arrived at hospital it was up to 39.2, I definitely wouldn't be going home today. As the day wore on despite having intravenous antibiotics, I was vomiting and feeling pretty lousy. I was really disappointed I wouldn't be going to Sydney either - my 3 brothers were going to do the Weet-Bix Tryatholon and we were staying at Mummy's cousin's place. Janelle came and visited me and I got to play the Starlight Game machine when I wasn't feeling too bad.
Friday 30 January 2009
Today first up I went to the Dentist - my gums are a bit infected because my neurophils are low the plaque goes berserk. Then it was off to school, Mummy said it was like my first day of Kindergarten again, only worse. I lasted 3 hours before I got tired and they rang Mummy to come and get me, I liked being back and seeing my friends though. Friday afternoon we went and saw my indoor soccer team play - we went down 2-1 to the Budgie Bullets, but it was a great game. My older brother's, Kyle and Kurt, team won 2-1.
Thursday 29 January 2009
Back to hospital today to see if our blood count is OK to have my cyclo treatment. It wasn't! I had a another platelet transfusion and get to come back on Monday, although Dr Frank doesn't think it will be high enough then either. My highlight today was giving Dr Frank a wooden spoon with 2008/09 - Jets on it - he took it in good humour. I got to see my Football NSW mates this afternoon - that was pretty cool too.
